Hall Star Herd

Pedigree Aberdeen Angus based in Cheshire

PEDIGREE CATTLE

Our herd is bred from well-known reputable breeders from within the Aberdeen Angus Society.

The aim of the breeding program is for our cows to produce pedigree cattle which are either sold as in-calf heifers or steers to local markets each spring.

Cows are usually housed from mid-November and cared for during the winter months in preparation for spring calving.  Whilst breeding heifers take advantage of the mild winters the region has to offer and spend their time on a concentrated diet of forage rape and barley straw.

CALVING BEGINS

care, guidance & nourishment

As with any farm spring and summer seasons are very busy times and preparation for harvest begins.  Once calving begins cows and their calves roam in their natural habitat allowing them to remain together strengthening the maternal bond. The cows can provide essential care, guidance, and nourishment to their calves in a more natural and comfortable environment.  By introducing the bull to the cows from June onwards, the Hall Star Herd can exercise control over the breeding process. This allows for better management of the calving season, ensuring that the majority of the cows give birth during the desired period.

FERTILE PASTURES

Primarily grass-based system

Our fertile pasturelands and meadows support the cattle’s nutritional needs, and the Hall Star Herd takes advantage of these natural resources to raise the herd on a primarily grass-based system.

Weaning starts a few weeks after the cows are housed in December and young stock are separated depending on age and weight.   Records are maintained thoughout the year for each animal in the Hall Star Herd, this includes information on pedigree, birth dates, health history, breeding data, and performance records. These records aid in making informed breeding decisions and monitoring the overall progress of the herd.  Health and Welfare is our number one priority within the herd, with regular veterinary care, including vaccinations and preventive measures against common cattle diseases this ensures the well-being of the herd.

sustainable farming practices

Biodiversity and soil health

With the herds docile and calm temperament, the local footpath committee appreciate and enjoy the presence of these animals while maintaining a safe and peaceful environment.

The Hall Star Herd is committed to sustainable farming practices. By minimizing the use of concentrates and fertilizers, we reduce the environmental impact of our operations. Our grass-based system allows for efficient utilisation of natural resources, promoting biodiversity and soil health.
